Observation for Clinical Findings and Pure Tone Audiometry in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media

Abstract
The author attempted to study the statistical analysis of clinical findings (such as age, side, duration, state of perforation of tympanicmembrane, pneumatization of mastoid air cells, appearance of choleatoma, etc) and pure tone audiometry in chronic suppurative otitis media.
210 patients (267 ears) who visited and had been taken audiometry at our department during the periods from January, 1976 to June, 1978 were studied and following results were obtained.
1. Male to female ratio was about 2 : 1.
2. Right to left ratio was 1 : 1 and the ratio between unilateral and bilateral was 2.7 : 1.
3. More than 40% of total patient had suffered for more than 10 years since the onset.
4. Percentages of tympanic membrane perforation according to the size of perforation and location of the perforation were as following,
a. small perforation 36.7 %
b. large perforatior 37.1%
c. total defect 26.2%
d. tuba! perforation 3%
e. central perforation 82010¢¥
f. marginal perforation 7.50/
g, attic perroration??????7.501,,0
5. ¢¥Mastoid pneumatization: Undeveloped type 97.44%, Well developed type 2. 6%
6. Cholesteatoma formation in chronic suppurative otitis media seems to have no clear relation with the size of the tympanic perforation and the duration of the disease, but to have a significant relation to the location of the tympanic perforation (attic perforation-75%, marginal perforation-40%, central perforation 10.5%, tubal perforation-O%).
7. Hearing loss increased in cases of long duration of the disease, but there was no significant difference in air-bone gap.
8. Hearing loss showed increasing to the size of-tympanic perforation, and also showed increasing trend in cases of marginal and attic perforation.
9. Hearing loss in cholesteatoma cases showed increasing trend in air conduction than non-cholesteatoma cases.
